On June 18, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., the Chesapeake Police Department and city officials will hold a meeting at Hickory High School. The public is invited to provide comments on proposed amendments to the city’s Discharging Firearms ordinance.

The proposed changes aim to address community concerns after several incidents where bullets crossed property lines, posing risks to neighbors. The new rules would prohibit discharging firearms across property boundaries without written consent from the property owner. Violating this provision would be classified as a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Additionally, a civil penalty of $250 would be imposed on any property owner who allows another person to discharge a firearm in such a manner that the projectile crosses onto another’s property.

For those interested in reviewing the existing ordinance, it is available for viewing.

For more information, contact the City of Chesapeake at 306 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322 or by phone at 757-382-2489.
